Love Occurs When You Listen and Hold Space

I wanted to share this article in hopes of creating understanding among the spiritual community and beyond about what it’s like to be traumatized and why we may reject your spiritual concepts in times of crisis. (And it’s perfectly healthy to do so!)

I am a fan of many spiritual practices, however have trouble swallowing some of the bypassy spiritual concepts. They have a huge place in my heart, but not when I’m struggling with mental health and safety issues. Many find this to be the case. When someone is in crisis, some of these phrases, while meant well, can be truly damaging and even retraumatizing to the person you are trying to help. It’s not up to us to see your intention when every cell in our body is telling us that you are not safe either, because there’s a lot of truth to what our body is telling us and we need to have the space to learn to trust it again.

Healers, spiritual leaders, lovers, parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles….. I ask you. Please become trauma informed. It’s a truly loving act. The majority of our mental health problems stem from trauma and in order for our hearts, minds, and bodies to heal, we need understanding and connection. Thank you for reading. I love and appreciate you. 🙏❤️🔥
